If you've ever walked out of an interview thinking, "Ugh… I kinda rambled," or "I forgot to mention the good part!" — you're not alone. Most people either undersell themselves or sound like they're reciting from a script. Neither one gets the callback.
That's exactly why I created the SMART Interview Framework — to help real people tell real stories in a way that feels sharp, confident, and human.
SMART stands for:
The STAR method is fine. But it often sounds stiff or robotic. SMART adds two game-changing pieces:
Question: "Tell me about a challenge you overcame at work."
S (Story): "I was managing a remote team across 3 time zones when our main project tool crashed two days before launch."
M (Mindset): "I knew panic would be contagious, so I focused on what we could control."
A (Action): "I set up an emergency Notion board, reallocated tasks, and sent daily async updates to keep everyone aligned."
R (Result): "We launched on time with zero client complaints — and we kept the Notion system after."
T (Tieback): "That's exactly the kind of challenge I'd expect in this role, and I'd love to bring that same calm-under-pressure approach to your team."
